Extracts from the Annual Report on the Working Party of the 79th Cameron Highlanders, during the Hot Season of 1865

t Officers Staff Sergeants Drummers Corporals Privates Maitland, left Rawulpindee en route for the hills beyond Murree, to be eraployed in road-making; followed by the head-quarters of the regiment on the 9th May, strengthf under command of Lieutenant-Colonel Hodgson. On the 19tli May, after some little detention on the way, the two detachments arrived at, and were located, the headquarters and right wing at Gooja Gullce, the left wing atGhora Dhaka, both parties under canvass. Gooja Gullec is in a gorge on the lower end of a spur of the Changla Gullee hill, distant from Murree Gooja Gullee. 14 miles, and at an elevation above the sea level of 8,095 feet. The camp was pitched in a forest of cedars and horse-cliesnuts, many of them of considerable age and great size, with a good deal of underwood interspersed. T. he surface soil consisted of a deep deposit of decayed and decaying wood, bark and leaves, mixed with the debris of limestone. The subsoil a black loam, chiefly of vegetable matter. The underwood having been cleared away, t!ie tents were pitched on two slight ridges, and placed with as much regularity as the nature of the ground would admit of. I do not consider Gooja Gullee a desirable locality for encamping European troops, as, though from the amount of shade the coolness is agreeable, the soil, from its constituents, and retentiveness of moisture, is objectionable, and being between two hills and pretty densely wooded, there is a want of free circulation of air. The water is neither abundant nor good, the sole source of supply being from deposits of snow buried under earth and leaves.
